A Brief History of Awsworth: a short history of Awsworth, Notts, by J M Lee
A Brief History of Awsworth (Ed 2/2015): Awsworth today is a dormitory area for a collection of nearby conurbations but was once a tiny hamlet surrounded on all sides by rural England. Its origins go back at least to Saxon times. After that, as the centuries progressed, it came under some complex and dramatic influences: Lenton Priory, and then a number of the nation’s great families. As their influence slowly faded the area progressed rapidly towards a more industrial future. Mining, for centuries an isolated and local activity, took its first steps towards operations on an industrial scale. Awsworth developed an impressive industrial heritage, including a network of canals and railways which remain fascinating to this day. Immediate surroundings have been included for the sake of clarity.
